Andrew McDougall
I am a translator of fiction and non-fiction texts from Portuguese, Spanish and Catalan into English. My published literary work from Portuguese includes a co-translation of 'Paradise and Other Hells' by José Eduardo Agualusa, as well as translating short fiction by Clodie Vasli, Cuti, Decio Zylbersztajn, Esmeralda Ribeiro, Gabriela Ruivo, Geni Guimarães, Henrique Rodrigues, Patrícia Alves Santos Oliveira and Verônica de Souza Santos. I translated a chapter by Ana Cristina Silva as part of the Bode Inspiratório-Escape Goat project, on which I also collaborated as an editor. I have been involved with the Brazilian Translation Club at UCL and in 2021 led a workshop as part of their Afro-Brazilian series. I also proofread an anthology of Afro-Brazilian short stories, featuring several of my own translations, forthcoming from UCL Press. Some of my other work from Portuguese has been published in journals such as Latin American Literature Today and Art in Translation.
Born in Glasgow, I studied Portuguese and English Literature at the University of Edinburgh. I have also lived in Sussex, Lisbon, Coimbra, Logroño, Vitoria-Gasteiz and Norwich, where I completed an MA in Literary Translation at the University of East Anglia.
