A native of São Paulo, Brazil, Ilze Duarte holds a bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature and a graduate-level degree in English/Portuguese translation from Universidade de São Paulo. She is based in the US, where she writes short prose and translates works by contemporary Brazilian authors. Her translations of works by Marilia Arnaud, João Anzanello Carrascoza, and Claudia Nina appear in various literary magazines, including Asymptote, Exchanges Journal, La Piccioletta Barca, Michigan Quarterly Review, Words Without Borders, and Your Impossible Voice.

Ilze is a recipient of the 2024 Sundial Literary Translation Award, which included prize money and publication of her translation of The Book of Affects, a short story collection by Marilia Arnaud published by Sundial House in November 2024. A story by Marilian Arnaud in Ilze's translation is featured in Deep Vellum's Best Translations 2026.

Ilze was honored to serve as one of five judges for the 2025 ALTA Translation Award in Prose.
