A native of São Paulo, Brazil, Ilze Duarte holds a bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature and a graduate-level degree in English/Portuguese translation from Universidade de São Paulo. She is based in the U.S., where she writes short prose and translates works by contemporary Brazilian authors. Her translations of works by Marilia Arnaud and João Anzanello Carrascoza, both award-winning novelists and short story writers, have appeared in various literary magazines, including Michigan Quarterly Review, Words Without Borders, Asymptote, Exchanges Journal, Norwest Review, and Your Impossible Voice.

Ilze is a recipient of the 2024 Sundial House Literary Translation Award, which includes prize money and publication of her translation of The Book of Affects, a short story collection by Marilia Arnaud to be published in December 2024.
